FAQ

Questions, answered honestly.

Everything people ask before their first bar — what it is, how it behaves on skin, and how we sell it.

What makes tallow soap different from everything else?+

Most bars on the shelf are synthetic detergent wearing the word soap. This is the other thing: true soap — one fat, saponified the old way, cured hard. One ingredient on the label and nothing else in the bar.

Does it smell like beef?+

No. Properly rendered tallow is nearly odourless, so the fragrance-free bar smells of almost nothing — clean and neutral, never beefy. If a tallow soap ever smells of the farmyard, that is poor rendering, not the tallow itself.

Is it really fragrance free?+

Yes. No masking agents, no “natural fragrance.” If you can smell anything beyond clean fat, we did it wrong.

Is there lye in it? Is that safe?+

Every real bar of soap is made by combining fats with lye — a process called saponification. By the time the bar has cured, no lye remains: it has all been converted into soap and the glycerin that comes with it. Nothing caustic touches your skin.

Will it clog my pores or break me out?+

A rinse-off bar behaves very differently from rubbing tallow onto your skin and leaving it there — it cleans and rinses clean. Everyone’s skin is different, though, so if you are acne-prone, patch test first and see how yours responds.

Is it good for sensitive skin?+

It is the bar we built for exactly that. Fragrance free means no masking agents, nothing added to react to — just grass-fed beef tallow. As with any new product, patch test before your first full wash.

Can I use it on my face, not just my body?+

Yes — hands, body, and face. It is one simple, gentle bar, not a dozen specialised products.

Where does the tallow come from?+

Tallow is rendered beef fat — a byproduct of the beef industry that would otherwise go to waste. Turning it into soap is part of the point.

Why animal fat at all?+

It is what soap was made from for generations, before industrial surfactants existed. Tallow’s fat profile mirrors your skin’s own, which is why it cleans without stripping. Using a fat that would otherwise be waste keeps it honest and low-impact.

Is it vegan?+

No. Non vegan — the bar is made from tallow, an animal fat. We label it clearly so you can decide before you buy.

How long does one bar actually last?+

Three to six weeks for one person showering daily. It depends on water hardness and how much you use.

Why 42 bars?+

42 is our case — every pack is built from it: the 84 is two cases, the 504 is twelve. Two reasons it stays 42. The practical one: 42 is a clean number to pack and ship. It stacks, no half-empty boxes, and the whole range stays tidy off it. The honest one: 42 is the answer to life, the universe, and everything. Douglas Adams settled that decades ago. We just packed accordingly. A bar lasts one person three to six weeks, so 42 bars is roughly a year of soap for a family of four.

Does tallow soap go off?+

Not the way food does. Soap doesn’t spoil. There’s nothing in a cured bar for bacteria to live on. We advise using a bar within two years. Ours hold up well past a year in normal storage, and a hard tallow bar only gets harder and milder as it cures. What eventually dates a bar is the fat slowly oxidising over years, and even then it’s still safe to use. It just stops smelling its best. Store it cool, dry, and out of direct sun, with a little airflow. Not sealed in plastic, not on a steamy bathroom shelf.

How do I store it so it lasts?+

Keep it on a draining dish, out of standing water, so it dries fully between uses. A bar left sitting in a puddle turns to mush far faster than one that gets to dry out.

Why mostly bulk sizes?+

Because the small packs are how you try it, and the case is how you use it. Per-bar price drops as the pack grows. Fewer boxes, fewer reorders, less packaging.

Do you make anything else?+

No. One bar, fragrance free, in packs from small to pallet. When we make something else, it will have its own name.

Shipping and returns?+

Free shipping on all orders. We don’t offer returns — buy the size that fits your household and stock up with confidence.
