Fragrance-Free vs Unscented: Read the Label

Fragrance-free and unscented are not the same word on a label. What each can mean, where to look on the ingredient list, and what Tallow Soap’s bar contains.

The Tallow Standard: one ingredient, written down

Fragrance-free and unscented sound like the same promise. On a label, they can mean different things.

What unscented can mean

Unscented describes how a product smells. It does not always tell you what is in it.

The FDA explains it plainly on its page about fragrances in cosmetics: even some products labeled unscented may contain fragrance ingredients, because a manufacturer may add just enough fragrance to mask the smell of other ingredients without giving the product a noticeable scent.

So a product can smell of nothing and still contain fragrance.

What fragrance-free should mean

Fragrance-free describes what was added. No fragrance. Nothing to mask anything.

Read the fragrance claim alongside the ingredients. If the label leaves you unsure, ask the manufacturer what has been added for scent or masking.

How to read the label

Turn the product over and read the ingredients. Look for:

  • Fragrance, or parfum
  • Essential oils, or plant extracts listed for scent
  • Ingredients described as masking agents

This is a starting check. An essential oil or plant extract may have more than one function, and a label may not identify masking ingredients clearly. Ask the manufacturer if the function or sourcing is uncertain.

What Tallow Soap’s bar contains

Tallow Soap uses one soapmaking fat: grass-fed beef tallow. No fragrance or masking agents are added. Nothing is added for scent or to cover a scent.

What you smell is the bar itself, and it smells of almost nothing: clean and neutral. Issue 19 explains why.

Why it matters at home

If you check the products in your house, the formulation is a useful place to start. Tallow Soap adds no fragrance or masking agents.

The short version

Unscented tells you how something smells. Fragrance-free tells you what was left out. Read the ingredients and ask the manufacturer if the claim needs explaining.
